Low Volume Node

A Low Volume Node (LVN) is a price level in a volume profile where significantly less volume was traded than at surrounding levels. LVNs represent areas of price rejection or rapid movement: thin zones where price tends to accelerate when revisited.

A Low Volume Node (LVN) is a trough in a volume profile: a price level or zone where very little volume was traded relative to surrounding levels. LVNs represent areas the market moved through quickly without conducting significant two-sided business.

Why LVNs form

LVNs develop where the market experienced rapid, directional movement without pausing for auction equilibrium. Common causes:

  • Breakout moves: when price breaks out of a consolidation range, it often moves through multiple ticks quickly, leaving thin volume behind
  • Stop runs: aggressive sweeps through levels leave very little transacted volume
  • Gap zones: the overnight gap area between sessions often shows LVNs in the volume profile
  • News-driven spikes: sudden directional moves on economic releases create LVNs in the initial move range

LVN behavior

LVN as a fast lane: when price re-enters a low volume zone, it tends to move quickly. There is little resting interest: few participants feel the price is fair value: so price accelerates through with minimal friction until it reaches the next HVN.

LVN as a target: if price is approaching an LVN, expect acceleration once it enters. Targets should be placed at the HVN or POC on the other side of the LVN, not within it.

LVN as a filter: if price is struggling to move through an LVN (where it should be moving fast), something is wrong. Absorption may be occurring. Reassess the trade.

Practical use

Entry refinement: entering just as price enters an LVN gives the trade immediate momentum. The thin area provides little resistance and price should move toward the next HVN relatively quickly.

Stop placement: a stop placed on the other side of an LVN has a natural buffer: price would need to accelerate back through the thin zone and into the HVN behind it to trigger your stop, which requires sustained directional commitment.
